In the context of its 2017-2021 cooperation programme funded by the Belgian Development Cooperation, the APEFE supports the Ministry of Health of Benin in the training of paramedical staff.

Benin is facing severe difficulties concerning the training, deployment, retention and efficiency of health care staff, and also the matching of the production of health professionals with the skills needs of the sector, in particular with regard to paramedical staff. It is in this context that an important meeting took place from 11 to 15 March 2019 following which a strategic development plan was drawn up for the Nursing and Midwifery Training Institute (IFSIO) of the University of Parakou.

Following this meeting with the authorities of the Ministry of Health and of the University of Parakou, as well as with the Institute's management team and teaching staff representatives, the IFSIO has just acquired a forecasting tool, funded by the APEFE. This tool will increase the quality of training provided to its students, thus enabling them to plan and budget for the activities that need to be conducted over the next five years.

By way of reminder, the Nursing and Midwifery Training Institute of the University of Parakou was established three years ago, thanks to the support of the APEFE and Enabel with the goal of remedying the severe shortage of nurses and midwives in Benin, and in the north of the country in particular.
