Liege Airport has experienced an exceptional 2017 in the transport of goods, confirming its role as the leading cargo airport in Belgium. It recorded growth of 8.5% compared with the previous year.
This growth is supported by e-commerce
Last year, approximately 717,000 tonnes of goods transited through Liege Airport. This excellent result can be explained by the growth in the transportation of goods purchased from websites such as Amazon and Alibaba, and by general good economic performance in Europe.
Electronic commerce is not limited to large businesses; it is also experiencing exponential growth among individuals sending their parcels by air. Liege Airport is a prime location for a series of air operators and two new airlines, Air China Cargo and Air Bridge Cargo, have recently moved to the site.
The airport is developing its relationships with the two electronic commerce giants and is thus becoming one of the most important airport sites in Europe for China and the United States.
Major investments
Liege Airport has accelerated its investment programme so it can maintain this momentum. More than 50 million euros will be spent on the construction of two new hangars measuring 6,000 m² and 20,000 m² as well as four new parking areas for large-capacity cargo planes. These new investments are expected to create several hundred jobs.
The property subsidiary Liege Airport Business Park is also experiencing a great deal of success, with an occupancy rate of 97% for offices, rising to 100% for warehouses.
