The RenoWatt project has opened to all Wallonia

In order to meet the European Union's Climate and Energy Objectives, the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Union’s ELENA Programme have decided to support the RenoWatt project, which will be developed and extended to the whole region of Wallonia.

The ELENA Programme is a joint initiative of the EIB and the European Commission under the “Intelligent Energy – Europe (IEE II)” programme, and is currently financed by EU funds from the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. It supports projects aimed at improving energy efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the renewable energy share of energy consumption.

The RenoWatt project aims at improving the energy efficiency of public buildings. It is a one-stop shop which is responsible for the conclusion of energy performance contracts (EPCs), selects buildings that are suitable candidates for renovation, launches the public procurement procedure and assists municipalities with the implementation of EPCs. Its pilot phase was carried out in the Liège area between 2014 and 2017 and led to the conclusion of five EPCs totalling 59 million euro and to the renovation of 136 buildings.

Thanks to the financing, the RenoWatt project will now cover all Wallonia, supporting municipalities in their energy transition by focusing on three areas: EPCs, pooling of buildings and central purchasing. The objective is to offer free technical assistance to Wallonia's 262 municipalities with a view to carrying out at least 100 million euro of investments under EPCs covering more than 500 buildings.

The budget planned for the project amounts to 5.2 million euro for a duration of up to 3.5 years: 3.5 million will be financed by the European Union through the ELENA Programme, while the remaining 1.7 million euro will be financed by the Walloon Government.
